Located at 61 Colvin Avenue in Albany, NY, Atlas Jiu Jitsu is the Capital Region headquarters for Brazilian jiu jitsu, mixed martial arts, striking, strength conditioning, and youth training. With more than 6,000 square feet of mat space, a full martial arts training facility, and experienced instructors, our Albany academy gives kids a place to learn, grow, and have fun while building real skills.
Parents choose our Tiny Titans program because it is more than just another activity. It is a form of children’s martial arts that helps kids develop discipline, focus, physical coordination, self-control, and practical self-defense skills. Whether your child is shy, energetic, athletic, new to sports, or already interested in martial arts, Brazilian jiu jitsu can be a great fit.
Brazilian jiu jitsu, often called BJJ, is a grappling-based martial art focused on control, leverage, and technique. Unlike striking-based martial arts, Brazilian jiu jitsu does not depend on punches or kicks. Instead, students learn how to use body positioning, grips, escapes, takedowns, pins, and submissions in a controlled training environment.
One of the core ideas behind BJJ is that a smaller person can defend themselves against a larger person by using smart technique instead of brute strength. For children, this is a powerful lesson. It teaches them that patience, problem-solving, and focus can overcome panic and frustration.
Because Brazilian jiu jitsu involves close physical movement and partner-based training, students also learn responsibility. They must listen carefully, follow instructions, protect their training partners, and practice with control. That makes BJJ one of the most complete forms of youth martial arts classes available.
Parents often look for children’s martial arts because they want their kids to become more confident, more disciplined, and more active. Brazilian jiu jitsu supports all of those goals.
Physically, jiu jitsu helps children improve coordination, flexibility, balance, strength, and overall fitness. Kids learn how to move with purpose, control their bodies, and become more comfortable with physical activity. For children who do not enjoy traditional team sports, jiu jitsu can be a great alternative because progress is individual while still happening in a team-like environment.
Mentally, BJJ helps children learn focus and persistence. Techniques take time to understand. Drills take repetition. Sparring requires calm thinking. Students quickly learn that improvement comes from effort, consistency, and listening to instruction.
Emotionally, children’s jiu jitsu can help kids become more confident and resilient. They learn that it is okay to struggle. They learn how to stay calm when they are uncomfortable. They learn how to try again after making a mistake. Those are lessons every child can use at school, at home, and in everyday life.
Atlas Jiu Jitsu’s Brazilian jiu jitsu program is led by Edward Anthony, a 3rd-degree black belt under Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Coral Belt Julio “Foca” Fernandez. Edward began his BJJ journey in New York City at the renowned Renzo Gracie school, where he trained under John Danaher. He also holds a brown belt in judo under former Olympic hopeful Nick Kossor.
Edward has competed at a high level around the world and has earned multiple Pan American gold medals, National Championship titles, and a World Silver Medal. He has held #1 world rankings in his division as a purple belt, brown belt, and black belt in his age category, as recognized by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation.
This level of experience helps shape the culture and standards of the Atlas Jiu Jitsu program. Students benefit from a school that understands both the technical side of Brazilian jiu jitsu and the importance of building a positive, disciplined learning environment.
