Brazilian jiu jitsu is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on controlling an opponent through leverage, positioning, technique, chokes, and joint locks. Unlike many traditional martial arts that rely heavily on striking or memorized forms, BJJ is built around practical application. Students learn how to move, control, escape, defend, and submit through hands-on training.
One of the main reasons jiu jitsu is so effective is that it allows a smaller or weaker person to defend against a larger opponent by using skill, timing, leverage, and strategy. This makes Brazilian jiu jitsu valuable for self-defense, competition, physical conditioning, and mental discipline.
At Atlas Jiu Jitsu in Buda, our jiu jitsu classes are designed to help students build from the ground up. Beginners are not expected to know anything before they start. We teach the positions, movements, and concepts clearly, so every student understands what they are learning and why it matters.
At Atlas, nothing is random. Our BJJ classes follow a rotating curriculum created by Edward Anthony, a third degree black belt and highly accomplished competitor with multiple national championship titles. The program is designed to cover the essential positions, techniques, and transitions of Brazilian jiu jitsu in a clear and organized way.
Every class is built around real progress. Students learn both takedowns and groundwork, with instruction that connects individual techniques to broader jiu jitsu concepts. Instead of simply collecting moves, students develop an understanding of how BJJ works in live situations.
Our Brazilian jiu jitsu program focuses on both competition jiu jitsu and self-defense. That means you will learn techniques that are useful in tournaments, on the mats, and in real-world defensive situations. For students interested in mixed martial arts, a strong BJJ foundation is also essential.
The head instructor at our Buda facility is Jim “Yeti” Niemie, a brown belt under Edward Anthony. Yeti has been training with Edward since 2014 and began competing after only a few months in Brazilian jiu jitsu. He quickly developed a passion for the competition side of the sport and has tested his skills in tournaments across the United States and beyond.
Yeti has won IBJJF gold medals in New York, Boston, San Antonio, Toronto, Dallas, Austin, Waco, and other locations. He has also been ranked by the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation in the top 10 of his division as a blue belt, purple belt, and brown belt.
Before jiu jitsu, Yeti earned his BA and MBA from The University at Albany, where he was a member of the football team. He also served as an Infantryman in the United States Marine Corps, completing two combat deployments to Iraq. That background brings discipline, toughness, leadership, and practical experience into his approach as an instructor.
